A Gathering on the Norfolk Plains
People from all over Tasmania and many from mainland states congregated at Longford, northern Tasmania for the 200th year since Norfolk Islanders were expelled from the island in 1813. Organised by the Northern Midlands Council "A Gathering on the Norfolk Plains" drew together descendants and interested people to gain and share knowledge of families from those early settlers.

We are looking forward to the events that are being organized by the various groups, who live in the areas where our Norfolk Islanders settled. Keep an eye on our ?events list?.

Commemoration of Norfolk Island Exodus
How would you feel if the population of your town doubled, with no extra food or housing available for the extra persons? Do you have an ancestor who came from Norfolk Island in 1807-1808.

The Hobart Town 1804 First Settlers Association Inc. is raising the awareness of impact the evacuation of Norfolk Island had on the already struggling settlement of Hobart Town. Several of the Islanders arrived in 1806, but the following year the exodus started in earnest.

President's Notes for Aug 2007
At our June meeting, we elected a new Treasurer. Mrs. Beth Stott unfortunately resigned, due to work and family commitments. Thank you Beth, for all your work during your time as a Committee member and Treasurer.

We welcome Mr. Ken Staite to the position. Ken was already a Committee member and we thank him for his willingness to undertake this position.

Our tour of the Grand Lodge of Tasmania was a most interesting afternoon, inspite of winter weather. Our thanks to the members for giving our group an interesting insight into the history and the workings of their organisation.

Conversations in the Cove
Our Association has a special interest in the Sullivans Cove area, particularly, the Dunn Street Car Park and adjacent land. The Dunn Street Car Park, is of course, owned by the Lord Mayor and the Citizens of Hobart and the adjacent area just outside the Bond Store Court yard, which is now a tiny park, is Crown Land. Consequently, they are vested in the people of this Island.
